A student was using headphones with a Chromebook computer. Everytime he clicked the APP icon the volume zeroed out. Here's what I did to solve the problem.

I had the student shut down Chromebook completely.

Plug the headset into the audio jack.

Restart Chromebook

Now Chromebook will rescan for audio devices and that solved the problem.

Enjoy your computer (Chromebook).

How to Delete History and Bookmarks in One Linked Google Chrome Internet Browser #FreeComputerTips written by in home computer, tablet and smart cell phone tutor, mobile virus removal and repair specialist, dual certified teacher J. One of the cool things about Google Chrome is the ability to sync history, passwords and bookmarks across computers and even computer operating systems by using your Google account. If you log into your Google account at your at the library, you don't necessarily want others to see your bookmarks and history or in the case of a teacher using a computer in which students have access.

Steps to Delete Bookmarks and History in JUST One Computer

Sign out of your Google account. You'd think that would do it right? Nope.

Click the three or four dots in the upper right hand corner which everyone, including my beginner in home computer tutoring clients here in Honolulu Hawaii are automatically supposed to know that means menu.

Click Settings

DO NOT delete your history yet. That will delete your history on ALL your synced computers. I personally like my history it puts less clicks in my life.

Click disconnect your Google account

Now click History or in some operating systems click the three or four dot menu again and go to history. You may find this link helpful http://chrome://history/

Delete your history.  There's a pull down menu in which you may select "Since the beginning of time" which will delete all the history

Click on the menu again and select Bookmarks then Bookmarks manager. You may find this link helpful http://chrome://bookmarks/  You may single left click on one bookmark, then using a previously learned shortcut, press CTRL a on your keyboard to select all. Your delete key on your keyboard will then do the rest.

You're Done!

I personally like my history and bookmarks. Makes my life easier and I can get to my virtual destination faster and more efficiently. When you're on a computer others may access however, it becomes a privacy or even a security issue.

Enjoy your computer.
Your friendly neighborhood computer geek and in home tutor,
Rick

I have an old Windows 7 netbook computer which was very slow running Windows 7. I finally installed a very fast, efficient and secure operating system called LUnbuntu. I love the speed it gives me from my old computer. I've even installed it alongside Windows as a dual boot for my in home and onsite computer clients here in Honolulu Hawaii and all of Oahu who MUST keep their computers running regardless of the computer virus on their Windows operating system.

Recently I ran across a problem with a 256 gigabyte flash drive (thumb drive) using the exfat operating system on the flash drive.

How to Mount and Use an exFAT Drive on Linux Including LUbuntu

The exFAT file system is ideal for flash drives and SD cards. It’s like FAT32, but without the 4 GB file size limit. You can use exFAT drives on Linux with full read-write support, but you’ll need to install a few packages first.
Try connecting an exFAT-formatted drive without installing the required software and you’ll often see “Unable to mount” error message saying “unknown file system type: ‘exfat’.”

What’s the Difference Between FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS?
We performed this process on Ubuntu 14.04, but it’ll be similar on other versions of Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.
First, open a Terminal window from your applications menu. On Ubuntu and similar Linux distributions, type the following command and press Enter to install the appropriate packages.

You’ll have to enter your password, too.
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install exfat-fuse exfat-utils

On other Linux distributions, use the appropriate software-installation command or open the graphical user interface and look for the “exfat-fuse” and “exfat-utils” packages. They may be called something a bit different — search for “exfat” and you should find them if they’re available in your Linux distribution’s package repositories.

Mount exFAT Drives Automatically

After you’ve installed the appropriate software, you can just connect an exFAT drive to your computer and it will be mounted automatically. If it’s already connected, just unplug the drive and plug it back in.
Modern Linux desktop environments are smart enough to automatically mount file systems when you connect removable devices, and — once you’ve installed the required software for mounting exFAT drives — they’ll work automatically. You can use them normally without ever pulling up a terminal again, and you’ll have full read-write support.

The exfat-utils package also contains a “mkfs.exfat” command. You can use this command to format partitions with the exFAT file system from Linux, if you like. You can also just format them with exFAT from Windows, Mac, or other devices that support exFAT.

Tablets and to some degree laptops have a problem with overheating. If you want to lay your tablet on something or your laptop put it on a laptop cooling fan.

The worst thing you can do is to lay your tablet or set your laptop on a pillow.  The heat builds up and heat is the enemy of electronics. So save yourself A LOT of repair charges and wear and tear on your tablet or laptop and get a laptop cooling fan. Don't worry, it still works with a tablet.

Be sure to call or text me to have your computer, laptop or Surface tablet cleaned professionally to cut down on more wear and tear.

Nothing has changed folks everything is okay. This move to have website owners pay more money for ssl certificates is ABSOLUTELY not necessary unless they are accepting payments ON their website NOT redirecting payments to a secure site. SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally bind a cryptographic key to an organization's details. When installed on a web server, it activates the padlock and the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. This move was started by the all powerful Google (or they seem to think they are) and some of the other internet browsers such as Firefox are picking up Google's breadcrumbs.

Sounds Good Right?

Yes, if you're purchasing something ON that website. That's why I use and have always used PayPal's or another purchasing service's websites instead of my own. Many of you who have supported my efforts by purchasing my ebook Secrets to Computer Virus Removal – How I Ticked Off My Competitors. When you purchased it you noticed you ended up at the PayPal website which does pay extra for the ssl certificate.

But Rick, To Post On Your Website I Have to Put in My Username and Password. Is That Safe?

Absolutely! You can still log into forums and WordPress sites and comment just like you have been before big brother Google decided WE ALL need to pay for ssl certificates. Carry on as usual. Nothing to see despite big brother and its followers.

Enjoy your computer as usual,

I Can't Read The Light Grey Text On The Computer Screen #FreeComputerTips by in home computer, smart cell phone, tablet tutor, mobile  computer, cell phone, tablet virus removal specialist covering Honolulu Hawaii and all of Oahu J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc. call or text 808.224.1870 Text only for the rest of the U.S.   for English Speaking Remote Computer Support

In a previous free computer tip I explained how to make text, graphics and desktop icons larger and smaller by holding down your CTRL key and using the scroll wheel on the mouse. On websites CTRL + and CTRL - to make text and graphics larger and smaller.

The challenge I'll help you with today is when bad website design places light colored text on a light background. To solve this we add another use to an old keyboard shortcut tip I gave you previously.

On your keyboard press and hold down your CTRL key and tap the a key

If the webpage you're trying to read has a programming term called focus, you have now selected everything on the webpage creating a navy blue background causing a higher contrast between the background color and the font color making it easier to read.

If the webpage you're trying to read did not highlight, click anywhere on a blank part of the webpage. Now use CTRL a again.

For very poor website design you can also make the text bigger with one of the previous keyboard shortcut tips I previously shared with you.

For good website design to make you more money online and create a following email me, Rick Kirkham, computerhelp808@gmail.com or visit http://BetterThanAWebsite.com

Limitations of The Chromebook Computer! #MobileComputerRepairHonoluluandRemotely   #FreeComputerTips by in home computer, tablet and smart cell phone tutor, mobile virus removal and repair specialist, dual certified teacher J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc. of Honolulu Hawaii covering all of Oahu. Call or text 808.224.1870 Text only for the rest of the U.S. for remote computer support for help with Windows PCs, Surface tablets or Apple/Mac computers

As a long term substitute teacher and in home tutor I may have more experience with Chromebooks than other ITs, computer repair technicians and in home computer tutors here in Honolulu Hawaii.

After recently helping another school with a Chromebook compatibility issue I realized the average person (or teacher for that matter) may not know the limitations of a Chromebook.

Limitations of Chromebook's Chrome Operating System

Chromebook is a closed operating system.

Think of it as a tablet where you can only go to one place to get applications. This is similar to iPads and the first Microsoft surface tablets.

Windows and Apple Programs Will Not Run

For the end computer user at least. Chrome web browser has a remote desktop application. you could use to take over your Windows computer. You'd need internet access for this to work. This would be your least geeky solution without hiring me to do the connections for you.

You could open up Developer Mode and install a program called Wine. The Chrome operating system is Linux based and Wine is available.  Wine is a program which allows Linux based computers to run executable (exe) files from Windows. Even then Wine won’t run on ARM computer chip Chromebooks, such as the Samsung Series 3 Chromebook. Wine will work properly on Intel Chromebooks. You could also run a program called VirtualBox which would involve running the Windows operating system inside the Chrome operating system. You'd have to install Windows and in my opinion would take more RAM than Chromebooks normally have built into them.  If you're going to go to all that trouble just get a cheap Windows computer. 95% of the computers out there are Windows computers anyway.

Printing

Check Google cloud print. Google Cloud Print is a service that connects your home and work printers to the web. Since your printer is connected to the web, you can print to it from anywhere, using any Internet-connected device, including PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, phones, or tablets. Not all printers will work with this. Mine was not recognized for example.

Streaming Video

Chromebook doesn't install Silverlight well. So for video such as Netflix there's an app you may need to download in the Chrome Web Store

Conclusion

Chromebook is a great option for very basic computer use especially, if the primary use is on the internet. I believe, at this stage of Chromebook development, if you think of Chromebook as a tablet style device with a keyboard and not expect the power and flexibility as a full blown operating system for computers such as Windows or Apple, you will be happy with your choice of computer.

Enjoy your (Chromebook) computer.
Rick, your friendly neighborhood computer geek and tutor

One of the reasons I use this affiliate management company is I have the ability to link all my products and services. This way no matter what product or service my new computer support client buys through this affiliate management company, YOU still get paid with just one affiliate link!

Because you're representing my computer business I ask for some additional information. I'd look like a fool if a client said an affiliate promised something (no you can't do that) and I didn't have the slightest idea who he/she was talking about.
So be sure to fill out this form as well. This will also give me the information I need to make your free website.

You're Basically Running Your Own Part Time Business

As a Business Development Consultant, you couldn't be in better hands. I'll help you anyway I can to make your business a success, which will then help me to become more of a success. You can then utilize that knowledge and diversify your business by adding more affiliate products and services.

My Computer Goes to Sleep When I Play Music! #FreeComputerTips by in home computer, tablet and smart cell phone tutor, mobile virus removal and repair specialist, dual certified teacher J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc. of Honolulu Hawaii covering all of Oahu. Call or text 808.224.1870 Text only for the rest of the U.S. for remote computer support for help with Windows PCs, Surface tablets or Apple/Mac computers

I just had a highly intelligent teacher friend of mine ask me to set his computer so it doesn't go to sleep when playing music. To set your computer to never sleep go into

Control or Control Panel

Usually you can find Control by clicking on the start menu. In Windows 10 this is located in the lower left hand corner of your desktop screen and looks like a Window's icon.
In Windows 10 the Control icon is more difficult to find. If you don't have your Cortana search box showing,
Click the Windows icon
When you place your mouse over the menu a scroll bar will appear in the upper right hand corner
Scroll down into the C's and click on Cortana.
The search box will appear for Cortanan
Click inside the search box
Type in Control
Control Panel Desktop app will appear on the top of the menu
Click Control Panel Desktop app

Select Large Icons

If your Control Panel states Category view click on it and select Large Icons

Click Power Options
Click High Performance
Click Change Plan Settings
Click the pull down menus in all four boxes and select Never
Click Save

Now Turn Off Your Screen Saver

While in Power Options
Click Screen Saver or Personalization in the lower left hand corner

In Screen Saver
Click the pull down menu
Scroll up
Click None
Click OK

You're done!

Unless there's another program managing your power settings or screen savers or if you have a computer virus controlling those items your computer will no longer go to sleep nor will the screen saver open up and stop your music or your Netflix!

Enjoy your computer,
Rick, your friendly neighborhood computer geek and tutor
